Business Electricity

Electricity for Businesses

Electricity can be a huge expense for your business. Often times utilities are the 3rd largest expense for businesses, behind labor and materials. As a result, it is important for businesses to pay attention to what they are billed for business electric service.

There are many factors on your electric bill that determine the price you will pay for business electricity such as:

  • your annual load profile
  • the price per kwh on your energy contract
  • what service territory you are in
  • who your TDSP provider is
  • whether you are on a fixed or variable rate
  • whether certain items are passed through on your bill

The list goes on.

Commercial Electric Services

Most business owners are busy doing what they do best, running their business. That is where energy aggregators, brokers, and consultants come in. We are experts at the energy market and can help you obtain the best bang for your buck when it comes to your business electricity bill. In Texas, the energy market is deregulated. This means that consumers can choose where there electricity comes from, the term length, price per kwh, and electric plan desired from a variety of Retail Electric Providers.

Power To Choose

The Public Utility Commission created the “Power to Choose” website for residential customers. The Power to Choose website is an easy to use site that provides pricing based on usage, term length and location. Power to Choose is not affiliated with any one Retail Electric Provider and provides a fair, unbiased marketplace for electricity. Unfortunately, there are no business or commercial plans on the Power to Choose website.

Shopping for Business Electricity

Since businesses and commercial electric consumers in Texas are not allowed to use the Power to Choose website, they are left with other options to shop for electricity. These options are:

  1. Make a list of providers and call around for business electric plans. This method sounds easy, but there are many things to take into consideration. When you are calling different REP’s the price they give you could be the energy price per kwh, or the average price per kwh including TDSP passthrough charges. Also, You need to find out if the fixed price per kwh includes everything or passes through any energy charges, such as the basis zone charge. “Fixed Price” doesn’t always include the same items. In other words, you have to be sure you are comparing apples to apples.
  2. Use a website that compares energy prices. Even though these websites are easy to use, they are run by brokers or Retail Electric Providers who may or may not be affiliated with certain Retail Electric Providers. Certain REPs may skew prices in their favor.
  3. Use an energy broker such as TriStem. TriStem has agreements to broker business electric service with over a dozen Retail Electric Providers. We are able to shop around for you and ensure you are getting an apples to apples comparison of prices. We know what the market is doing and know what prices should be. All of the prices we receive are fair, and based on your annual load.  We can tailor your electric service agreement to your needs, so that the terms and conditions are most favorable to you, as there are many factors that can affect the actual price you pay for business electricity.

We Worry About Details So You Don't Have To

Energy Brokers get the best prices from Retail Electric Providers. Retail Electric Providers pay broker a fee for bringing them customers like you. It is the easiest and cheapest form of advertising a Retail Electric Provider can get. TriStem has been an advocate for consumers for 40 years. The complexity of electric bills and lack of oversight in the industry can leave consumers with the short end of the stick.  We have saved our clients millions of dollars on their bills over the years. Helping consumers navigate through the business electricity market with confidence, while educating and helping you along the way is what we do.  Our goal is to empower consumers to take control of their utility costs.
